지난 2019년 일본의 대한민국 수출 규제 조치로 국내 산업에서 화학 약품이 차지하는 중요성에 대한 경각심이 커진 가운데 수입에 의존하던 표면처리 화학약품의 국산화에 도전하는 한 중소기업이 주목받고 있다.

 

자동차, 반도체, 전기 등 산업 전반에 광범위하게 사용되는 공정인 도금(plating)은 제품의 부식 방지나 표면 장식을 위해 또는 기능성을 주기 위해 금속에 아연, 니켈, 크롬 등으로 얇은 보호막을 입히는 표면처리 과정이다.

 

이러한 도금 과정에는 화학 약품이 사용된다. 그러나 우리나라는 표면처리 약품 대부분을 일본, 독일, 프랑스, 미국 등에서 수입하고 있다.

 

현재 창업 4년 차를 맞은 (주)엠피피티(대표 홍민규)는 표면처리 화학 약품 국산화를 통해 매출을 빠르게 늘리며 성장하는 기업이다. 뿌리기업, 벤처기업 인증을 받았고 대내외적으로 기술력을 인정받고 있다.

 

Japan's export control to South Korea in 2019 raised awareness on importance of domestic parts, materials and chemicals industries. Rising to attention amid this sudden surprise and struggle is MPPT that is challenging localization of surface treatment chemicals.

 

Plating is a surface treatment process necessary in making cars, semiconductor and electricity. It covers the surface with thin protective films made of zinc, nickel or chromium to prevent corrosion or for decoration purpose. Plating needs chemicals and these chemicals are mostly imported from Japan, Germany, France and the US.

 

Established 4 years ago, MPPT is growing fast in sales by localization of these chemicals. The company obtained Root Enterprise and Venture Enterprise certifications for excellent techniques in the field.

◇일본 수입규제 속 추진한 국산화

연구 중심 스타트업 (주)엠피피티(MPPT)는 일본 수입규제로 국내 소·부·장(소재·부품·장비) 산업을 키워야 한다는 목소리가 한창 커지던 지난 2020년 설립됐다.

 

홍민규 엠피피티 대표는 “신소재공학을 전공하고 부친이 도금업체를 운영하고 있어 자연스럽게 표면처리 업계에 뛰어들게 됐다"며, "일본의 수입 규제를 계기로 해외 수입에 의존하는 표면처리 화학약품을 어떻게 국산화할 방법이 없을까 생각하다가 산학연 등을 통해 연구를 시작하면서 회사를 창업하게 됐다"고 설명했다.

 

“I majored in advanced materials engineering and my father ran a plating business. So it was natural for me to jump in the field. But it was when Japan took the export control that I started to see importance of localization of the chemicals. Like one thing leads to another, I engaged both academically and industrially here and there and eventually came to establish my own business.” says MPPT CEO Hong Min-kyu.

 

 

◇각 도금 공정에 필요한 맞춤형 화학 약품 생산

일반적으로 도금 공정은 전처리, 도금, 후처리 3가지 과정으로 이뤄진다. 각 공정에서 불량이 없어야 양질의 제품이 탄생할 수 있다.

 

홍민규 대표는 “도금이라는 게 화장이랑 비슷해서 세안이 제대로 안되면 화장이 뜨고 잘 안 먹는다. 도금도 세척공정, 도금 공정, 도금 이후에 색깔 등을 결정하는 후처리 공정 이렇게 세 가지로 나뉘는 데 세 공정 마다 불량이 없어야 하나의 완제품이 탄생한다”고 설명했다.

 

엠피피티의 전처리 약품으로는 각종 도금 프로세스에 필요한 알카리계·산성계 탈지제를 보유하고 있다. 도금 첨가제로써는 친환경적이고 도금 편차가 최소화되는 아연 도금의 진케이트 첨가제, 산성·알카리 아연 니켈 도금의 첨가제, 광택제 등을 보유하고 있다. 또한 도금 색상과 내식성이 뛰어난 각종 크로메이트 코팅제를 보유 및 생산한다.

 

특히, 엠피피티가 생산하는 아연 니켈 합금 도금 약품은 자동차부품, 전기부품, 방산부품, 산업기계 부품 등에 광범위하게 사용되는 제품으로 산성 조건에서 사용되며 기존 알칼리 조건 합금 약품에 비해 매우 빠른 도금 속도로 우수한 작업성을 자랑한다. 또 SST(salt spray test) 2,000시간 이상으로 기준 범위 1,000시간 보다 우수한 내식성을 보여준다.

 

엠피피티는 약품 생산 라인뿐만 아니라 8개의 파일럿 도금 라인을 통해 개발 약품을 검증하고 있다. 이를 통해 생산 약품을 도금해보고, 생산 제품의 품질 이상을 점검한다.

 

홍민규 대표는 "도금 과정에서 필요한 각종 약품을 자체적으로 생산하고, 고객에게 납품하면서 토탈 서비스를 제공하고 있다"며, "고객사 공정별 최적화된 맞춤형 표면처리 약품을 생산하고, 요구사항에 맞춰 최적의 서비스를 제공한다. 여기에 제품 출하 전 품질 테스트, 사후관리 서비스 등 고객 만족에 힘쓰고 있다"고 말했다.

A plating process goes through pre-treatment, plating and post-treatment. The quality is only guaranteed when there is not a single fault in all three processes.

 

“Plating is like make-up. If you don’t wash your face thoroughly before applying cosmetics, you cannot expect a good result. Like make-up goes through a number of stages of application, plating goes through three steps which must be flawless for a product to be perfect.” says Hong.

 

MPPT has alkaline and acidic degreasers that are needed for plating. Also has is zincate additive, acidic and alkaline zinc nickel plating additives, and polish alongside producing chromate coating agent.

 

The company’s zinc nickel alloy plating chemicals, in particular, are widely used such as in car parts, electrical parts, defense parts and industrial machine parts. They are used in acidic conditions and boasts faster plating speed than the existing alkaline alloy chemicals. Its corrosion resistance is more than 2,000 hours compared to the 1,000 standard hours as proven at a SST(Salt Spray Test). MPPT runs also 8 pilot plating lines for test of developed chemicals.

 

“We make chemicals with our own technique through optimized step by step process, offer customized products according to needs and wants, carry out tests before releasing the products, and provide excellent after-care services.” says Hong.

◇ESG 발맞춰 친환경 제품 개발 노력

전 세계적으로 친환경 ESG 경영 바람이 거세지는 가운데 엠피피티는 친환경 표면처리 약품 개발에 역량을 집중하며 시대 흐름에 따라가는 모습이다. 특히 환경 규제가 심화됨에 따라 엠피피티는 ‘코발트’나 ‘6가 크롬’ 등 중금속이 포함되지 않은 약품들을 개발해 생산한다.

 

코발트는 배터리에 많이 들어가는 소재로, 최근 전기차 생산량이 늘면서 가격이 급등하고 있다. 이에 엠피피티는 코발트를 대체해 도금 약품을 만들 수 있는 연구개발에 집중했고 코스트는 낮추고 친환경성은 높인 약품을 개발 판매하고 있다.

 

홍 대표는 "각 종 중금속과 청화소다, 불산계 등 환경 물질이 표면 처리 약품에 녹아 있다"며, "이런 물질을 사용하지 않고 품질을 낼 수 있는 친환경 약품 개발에 집중하고 있다"고 밝혔다.

 

한편 엠피피티(MPPT)는 미국 글로벌 화학 회사 ‘파브코(PAVCO)’의 한국 공식 파트너사로 파브코의 제품을 유통·판매하고, OEM 방식으로 제품도 생산하고 있다. 이를 통해 글로벌 수준의 제조 시설을 갖추고, 기술 교류를 통해 파브코의 선진 기술을 습득하면서 세계적 수준에 한 발 더 다가서는 기업으로 성장하고 있다.

 

In accordance with ESG trend, MPPT focuses on eco-friendly surface treatment chemicals especially such as cobalt and hexavalent chromium that are not contained with heavy metals.

 

Cobalt takes a big part in battery and the price is rising sharply alongside increasing number of electric cars. So MPPT focused on alternative chemicals to expensive cobalt while raising eco-friendliness with cost effectiveness.

 

“We are focusing on eco-friendly chemicals that do not contain heavy metals, blue soda and hydrofluoric acid substances.” says Hong.

 

MPPT is an official partner of PAVCO, an American chemical company. So MPPT circulates PAVCO products and also produces products through OEM. What this means is that the company has global level production facilities and technical knowhow from PAVCO.

◇표면처리 업계 새로운 혁신 이룰 것

홍민규 대표는 고령화된 표면처리 업계에서 젊은 피의 패기로 변화와 혁신을 위해 노력하고 있다.

 

홍 대표는 “도금 약품 종류, 특성, 사용법 등을 데이터화해 체계화하고 표준화된 매뉴얼을 만드는 작업을 하고 있다”며, “고객사들의 도금막을 샘플링해 분석 리포트를 제공하는 등 애프터 서비스에도 최선을 다하고 있다"고 말했다.

 

또 “열악한 표면처리 업계의 선진화를 위한 스마트 팩토리 도입과 기술 전수와 세미나 등 교육을 통한 후진 양성 노력도 이어가고 있다”며, "뿌리산업인 표면처리 분야를 발전시키면 국가 산업 발전에도 조금이나마 이바지할 수 있지 않을까 하는 자긍심을 가지고 일하고 있다"고 말했다.

 

홍민규 대표는 기술 강화를 통해 글로벌 확장에 나서겠다는 계획이다.

 

홍 대표는 "현재 베트남이나 인도, 일본 쪽도 수출할 수 있는 여건을 마련해 놓고 준비 중"이라며, "화학 강대국 사이에서 끊임없이 연구하고 노력해 고객들의 기대에 부응하는 회사가 되겠다"고 말했다.

“Experts at MPPT gather information of chemicals and make them into data and standardized manuals. We also do samplings of plating films from our client companies and provide analysis reports.” says Hong.

 

When asked about a future plan, Hong says, “We are working on export channels to Vietnam, India and Japan. MPPT will keep pushing forward its technical knowhow and zeal to answer to all demands of our clients.”
