2018년 평창 동계올림픽이 올해로 5주년을 맞았다. 평창 밤하늘을 화려하게 수놓은 드론쇼, 김연아 선수의 성화 점화, 올림픽의 가치를 보여준 남북공동입장, 아이언맨 윤성빈의 금빛 질주, 여자 컬링 ‘팀킴’의 ‘영미’를 외치는 소리 등 아직도 2018 평창 동계 올림픽을 떠올리면 생각나는 명장면들이다.

It has been 5 years since the Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang took place in 2018. The spectacular drone show, figure skating winner Kim Yu-na lighting the torch, the joint entry of North and South Korea, the speedy running of the nicknamed ironman Yun Sung-bin, the repeated shout ‘Youngmi’ from the women’s curling team were some of the unforgettable scenes of the PyeongChang 2018.

2018평창기념재단은 ‘2018 평창 동계 올림픽 및 동계패럴림픽’의 유산을 계승 발전시키고자 2019년 4월 설립됐다. 2018 평창 동계 올림픽 5주년을 맞아 평창의 레거시를 이어가고 있는 ‘2018평창기념재단’ 유승민 이사장(IOC 선수위원)을 만나 그동안의 성과와 평가를 들어보았다.

다음은 유승민 이사장과의 인터뷰를 요약 정리한 내용이다.

The PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation set sail in April 2019 to continue its legacy including the Paralympic Games. PowerKorea sat down with the foundation Chairman Ryu Seung-min and learned its achievements.

Below is a summary of the interview.

 

'2018평창기념재단' 소개와 주요사업은?

2018평창기념재단은 평창 동계올림픽 폐회 후 올림픽의 유산을 다양한 사업을 통해 지속적으로 증진 발전시키기 위해 설립됐다. 재단은 국민들이나 학생들이 동계 스포츠나 동계올림픽에 관한 것을 직접 경험하고 체험할 수 있도록 동계 스포츠 관련 사업을 추진한다.

대표적으로 '드림프로그램'은 지난 2004년 평창 동계올림픽을 유치하는 과정에서 시작되어 올해로 19회차를 맞았다. 눈을 접하기 어려운 국가의 청소년을 초청해 동계스포츠 훈련과 한류문화 체험 등을 진행한다. 지금까지 드림프로그램을 통해 약 97개국에서 2,500여명의 학생들이 참여했다. 실제 프로그램에 참가한 학생 중 올림픽에 출전한 선수들도 있다.

또 '플레이윈터'는 동계종목 꿈나무 및 생활 체육인들을 대상으로 동계스포츠의 저변을 확대하는 프로그램이다. 김연아 선수 및 전 국가대표 선수들이 피겨 강사로 직접 활동하여 진행하고 있다.

이 외에도 지난해 '평창평화포럼' 등 다양한 레거시 사업과 전국 학생을 대상으로 올림픽 가치를 교육하는 '수호랑 반다비 스포츠 캠프' 등을 운영하고 있다.

Q. Tell us about the foundation and what it does.

The PyeongChang 2018 Legacy Foundation opened the door in April 2019 to preserve and promote its legacy including the Paralympic Games. In order to achieve this, we host events and make projects to promote Winter Olympic Games.

‘DreamProgram’, for example, started in 2004 celebrating its 19th program in 2023.

We invite youth from all over the world from snowless countries to enjoy sports. Around 2,500 young students from 97 countries have visited so far. Some of them grew and played in the Olympics afterwards.

‘PLAYWINTER’, for another example, promotes winter sports. The figure queen Kim Yu-na is one of the instructors of this program.

Also worth mentioning is ‘PyeongChang Peace Forum’ and ‘Suhorang Bandabi Sports Camp’.

가장 중점을 두고 추진하시는 부분은?

동계올림픽, 동계 스포츠 저변 확대를 위한 활동에 대해 해외, 특히 IOC 등의 관련 단체에서 우리 재단을 굉장히 높이 평가하고 있다. 이런 부분이 쌓이다 보면 오는 ‘2024 강원도 동계 청소년 올림픽’에도 좋은 영향을 미칠 것으로 기대한다.

재단은 평창 동계올림픽에 이어 ‘2024 강원 동계 청소년 올림픽’에서 탄생한 유산도 일원화시켜 미래 세대에 전해 주는 역할을 한다. IOC나 국제기구에서 유산 플랜에 대해 잘 짜여 있지 않으면 굉장한 감점을 주기 때문에 (2024 강원도 청소년 동계 올림픽은) 매우 중요한 파트다. 그렇기 때문에 올해 준비를 잘해야 될 것 같다.

  Q. What are you most focused on?

It is encouraging that the IOC and related organizations praise highly of our activities to promote winter sports. If we keep carrying on our zeal, it will give a good influence to ‘the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games’.

We will keep the legacy of it alongside the PyeongChang. It is important we do this thoroughly as the IOC and international organizations take off the score if the legacy plan is not proper. In other words, we must be busy this year.

그동안 코로나19 등 어려운 상황에서도 성공적으로 재단을 운영해 왔다. 평가는?

2018평창기념재단은 설립 후 1년 만에 코로나19 상황을 맞이하며 사업을 운영하는 것이 쉽지 않았다. 그럼에도 재단은 철저한 방역을 거친 안전한 프로그램을 운영해왔다. 특히 2018 평창기념재단은 청소년과 유소년들에 중점을 두고 꿈과 희망을 지속적으로 유지하고 발전시켜야 한다는 철학을 가지고 다양한 프로젝트를 진행했다.

실제 다양한 프로그램을 진행하며 선수들을 배출하기도 했지만, 한정된 운영비로 높은 질의 프로그램을 구성하기 쉽지 않았다. 능력 있는 직원들이 많은데 능력을 발휘할 수 있도록 지원하고, 더 좋은 대우를 해주지 못 해 안타깝다. 이제부터는 운영비를 확대해 직원들이 더 좋은 환경에서 일할 수 있도록 지원할 방법을 찾고 있다.

Q. You have gone through the pandemic without major issues. How do others evaluate the foundation?

Like many businesses, we were also affected by the pandemic. So we focused more on preventive measures when running a program during the period. We give a great part of our effort to children and youth so that they can grow in confidence.

Again, like many businesses, lack of financial resources makes us hard to push forward our ideas and programs. So I’m working on increasing the operation budget to create a more encouraging work environment.

 

2018평창기념재단을 이끄는 유승민 이사장은 오는 2025년까지 임기를 이어간다. 그는 임기 중 재단 내부의 재정을 확충해 좀 더 단단한 재단을 만드는 것이 목표다.

IOC 선수 위원과 국제스포츠전략위원회(ISF) 이사장직도 맡고 있다. 앞으로의 행보는?

평창기념재단은 국민들에게 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있는 프로그램을 만들어 대한민국이 동계 스포츠 강국이라는 것을 알릴 수 있도록 노력하겠다.

1년 반 정도 남은 IOC 위원 임기 중 올해 아시안게임과 내년 파리올림픽까지 맡은 역할들을 잘 마무리하고 싶다, 그동안 쌓아온 다양한 경험을 스포츠계에 환원할 방법을 고민하고 있다.

 

Q. Lastly, what is your plan as President of the International Sport Strategy Foundation?

I plan to promote South Korea as the powerhouse of the Winter Olympic Games through the programs that can be easily accessible to the public.

During my rest one and half year term, I will continue to do my best with my appointed role during the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 this year and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games next year. I will take the lead on strengthening the international capabilities of Korea and find ways to share and spread my experience back to the sports world.
